Continuing to enjoy the recreational use of Lake Lyell is important to the community.

Constructed in 1982 to provide cooling water for nearby power stations, Lake Lyell has since become a much-loved spot for boating, fishing, and camping. As the primary water supply for the Mt Piper Power Station, the lake’s water levels have always fluctuated.

With the proposed pumped hydro project, levels will vary further — during construction, and once operational, rising and falling by about 2.5 metres each day.

Since 2021, we’ve been gathering community ideas for how residents and visitors can continue enjoying Lake Lyell throughout construction and operation.

We’re now planning new infrastructure and recreation features to support safe, ongoing access on and around the lake — and we need your input to make this work.

Community suggestions so far include floating docks, extended boat ramps, boardwalks, art installations, mountain biking trails, bird observation areas, education centres, and variable signage.
