How We Made the Lake Lyell Project Even Better
Imagine you have a backpack. At first, you could only fit 3 books inside. But then you find a way to pack it better — now you can fit 4 books in the same backpack. You didn’t get a bigger bag, you just used the space more cleverly.
That’s exactly what happened with the Lake Lyell Pumped Hydro project.
Originally, this project was going to make 335 megawatts (MW) of electricity - enough to power thousands of homes but after doing something called value engineering — which is just a smart way of looking at the project to make it better — the team figured out how to increase the power to 385 MW without changing the land it uses.
So what changed? The way the project is designed and built. Think of it like finding a smarter way to turn water into electricity using the same space and equipment, but with more energy coming out.
In short: Smarter design. More clean power.
